When I decided to write something about Valentin’s day I struggled to sequentially put my thoughts together so after a few attempts here goes..
I have been celebrating Valentine’s Day for as long as I can remember from making those cute, embellished cards in primary school to me and my friends buying each other stuff in high school in fear of not getting anything, basically it’s always been fun..! In the last few years though (as I have got older too..) I have come across a lot of cynics who believe that Valentine’s Day is a money-making commercial scam and people always do over-the-top acts (which are not consistent throughout the year) to show off their so-called romances.. A friend of mine even said the cheats are the ones who do the most extravagant gestures *gasp*
I agree on the commercialism of Valentine’s day, it has really got out of hand, to the point where it puts people under unnecessary pressure to outperform each other or even themselves year after year with bigger and more expensive gestures that everyone forgets what they are actually celebrating and rather look forward to the extravagant gifts.
I googled the history of Valentine’s Day and found that there is more than one theory/story behind Valentine’s Day but the one thing they have in common is it’s all about love and romance. I really do believe that it’s about just that, love! On this day we should be celebrating LOVE in its totality, its such a beautiful gift that it should be enough. We also shouldn’t be just celebrating LOVE with the our partners but with our friends and families as well, just one day throughout the year that is solely dedicated to LOVE other than the birthdays, anniversaries, weddings etc. We should encourage each other to just remind all those we love how much they mean to us, I know that most people say that they do this everyday, but actually we don’t. In our everyday lives we get caught up in our jobs, the needs of the business or our managers, our plans for the weekend, the blue monday, that crisis that you’re going through and when the hell do we remember love or find the time?
I think we should leave behind our misgivings that have been created by all the opportunists that make money of this day and give Valentine’s Day a break and just celebrate LOVE! C’mon
happy love day
